Women in business spotlight: dr. whitney young, Healthcare Hero
The Barrie Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Awards continue to highlight leaders making an impact locally.
This week’s spotlight features Whitney Young, who operates a naturopathic practice in the city and who won the Healthcare Hero Award.
Her work focuses on a holistic approach to health, helping patients look at the bigger picture when it comes to wellness.
My first thought when I heard my name announced, was at first, shock, surprise, gratitude and then, what do I do?
When asked why Dr. Young felt that her work resonated with the community, she replied that she has been in Barrie for 17 years, and this is the first time she has been up for the award.
The ways she has touched and been part of the community. She has done workshops for the City of Barrie, baby workshops for baby businesses, like Serenity Birth Studio, and has sponsored tournaments and runs – so it’s not just work in healthcare.
She credits her mother with probably encouraging her to go down the health road instead of acting. She graduated in 2008, set up shop in Barrie and joined the Rooted Clinic as a co-owner in 2013. When asked what sets her apart from the rest, and the challenges she has had to overcome, Dr. Young answered that she is always someone who looks at “what’s next”. When they started the clinic, with two naturopaths, and grown slowly over the years, she enjoys bringing on new naturopathic doctors, and helping them to build their practices. Then in the last year, she brought on a lot of intravenous vitamins and nutrients as well as iron deficiency (which can be a huge problem). Often women need iron. They have good reasons for this.
. I used to do a lot of fertility work with people struggling to get pregnant. I’m grateful that we could be part of their journey when I think about one family and their 7-year-old son.
Barrie was always receptive to naturopaths – in the last 17-18 years – but there was a lot more education needed about what a naturopath was in the past. Now more people are aware. It feels now it’s like picking the right naturopath.
We recommend keeping your medical doctor or nurse practitioner as they complement and support what you have here. Almost like a second opinion-way of looking at it. There is more collaboration – but we still have a long ways to go to bridge the gap and work collaboratively
