Provincial police laid impaired driving charges yesterday a week after getting multiple reports of concerning driving behaviour in Tay.

On June 20, around 11:20 a.m., Southern Georgian Bay OPP responded to complaints of a pickup truck driving erratically in the area of Highway 12 and Reeves Road.

Police say the vehicle was reportedly leaving the roadway, had struck a sign, and eventually came to a stop on a nearby private laneway. The suspect vehicle was found soon after parked at a residence.

Officers investigated and found the driver to be impaired. The 61-year-old man from Tay was arrested and transported to the detachment where further testing determined he exceeded the legal blood alcohol content limit.

He was charged with two impaired operation offences and is set to appear before a court in Midland on August 6.

Until then, the man faces a 90-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

Good intentions, dangerous move.

South Simcoe Police say a routine traffic stop in Innisfil was followed by an unexpected–and potentially alarming–encounter.

After completing the stop on Friday, police say a citizen approached an officer holding a black pistol, which turned out to be a defective air pistol.

The interaction was handled safely.

Police say the person was trying to surrender the air pistol for destruction.

Even so, police are stressing the danger of the situation.

“Realistic-looking firearms and replicas should never be brought directly to officers in public,” SSP stated on social media. “If you need to turn in a firearm, air pistol, pellet gun, BB gun, or imitation weapon, police say call the non-emergency line first, explain what you have and where it is, and wait for instructions on how it will be collected. Do not bring weapons — real or imitation — to traffic stops, active scenes, or approach officers with them in hand. If taking one to a station, leave it secured in your vehicle and wait for direction.”

Police say they appreciate people trying to do the right thing, but a quick phone call keeps everyone safe.

South Simcoe Police were called around 11:25 Monday morning to a report of an active shooter in the area of 25th Sideroad between Lockhart Road and the 10th Line in Innisfil.

In the end, police say there were no injuries and no weapons were found, and they confirm there was no threat to public safety.

“The report was determined to be unsubstantiated, and no charges will be laid,” police said on X.

Police added that due to the sensitive nature of the circumstances surrounding the call, no further information will be released.

Police are urging residents to be aware of distraction thefts after a Barrie senior was duped.

On June 23, 2026, police say a white SUV stopped in front of a 77-year-old woman’s home in the area of Ardagh Road and Ferndale Drive while she was outside gardening. The female passenger chatted with the woman, claiming she was a doctor and had been sent to check on someone.

“As the woman approached the vehicle, the passenger grabbed her, quickly replacing her valuable jewelry with fakes before the SUV drove away,” police said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.

Police add that these thieves count on people being polite.

“They keep the conversation going to create enough confusion to distract their victim long enough to steal from them without attracting any attention,” police stated in the news release. “The scenario may sound obvious. You may think you would never fall for it. But in the moment, it may not seem suspicious at all. That’s why these thefts work. Distraction thefts can happen anywhere – parking lots, stores, and even in your front yard.”

Police advise people to trust their instinct.

“If someone moves too close, they should step back, end the conversation, and walk away.”

Part 2) Another Barrie senior has been the victim of a distraction theft.

Barrie Police say the incident happened just after 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026, as the 75-year-old stood on the driveway of his east-end home.

The victim believes he was approached by a late-model grey or black Toyota RAV4 that had turned onto Lay Street from Duckworth Street.

“The male driver rolled down his window and asked for directions, explaining that he was new in the neighbourhood,” police said in a news release.

As the homeowner spoke with the driver, the vehicle edged closer, and a female passenger in the rear of the SUV rolled down her window and told him they had just come from the hospital where her father was dying. After he said he was sorry to hear that, police say the female insisted on giving him a gift for his compassion.

“The passenger first handed him what appeared to be a gold ring before offering him a necklace. As the victim leaned toward the open window, she placed the necklace around his neck and, without him realizing it, she removed his own necklace, which had his wedding ring attached,” according to the news release.

The suspects drove away westbound on Wellington Street East.

The victim discovered his necklace and wedding ring were missing once he returned inside his home.

The driver is described as a man in his 40s with a tanned complexion and beard, wearing a dark-coloured cap and tinted glasses. The female passenger is described as a woman in her 40s, with a tanned complexion and distinctive gold teeth. Neither suspect was believed to have an accent.

Anyone with information or who may have seen the suspect vehicle in the area of Lay Street, Duckworth Street, Wellington Street East around the time of the theft is asked to contact the investigating officer by email at bosborne@barriepolice.ca.
