Spring is almost here, summer will be on its heels, and for the Barrie Food Bank (BFB), it can be the lean seasons.

“Winter generosity carries us through the holidays,” said Karen Shuh, executive director of the BFB, in a news release. “But spring and summer are when donations slow down while need continues to grow.”

In January, the BFB supported more than 7,000 individuals, a six per cent increase from a year ago, which the organization says reflects the ongoing financial pressures facing local families.

“Rising housing costs, food prices, and fixed incomes are pushing more people to seek help for the first time,” the news release stated.

One of the most significant increases is among seniors, with visits rising 21 per cent over last year.

“These are people who worked their whole lives, raised families here, and built this community, “added Shuh. “Many more are now choosing between groceries, medication, and rent. No senior should have to make that decision.”

The campaign invites residents, businesses, and community groups to donate food, funds, or time and talent to help ensure support remains available throughout the coming months.
