South Simcoe Police (SSP) conducted a six-month crackdown on uninsured drivers.
Between January and June, officers laid 276 charges against people who were driving without insurance or had invalid coverage. They also laid three charges against drivers who tried to fake it with false proof of insurance.
The minimum fine upon conviction is $5,000 for each offence under Ontario’s Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, according to a news release from SSP.
“Uninsured vehicles not only pose significant liability consequences for all motorists, but also place unnecessary risk to other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists,” the news release stated.

Impaired driving-related charges were laid against a female driver late Friday night in Springwater Township during a R.I.D.E. program by Huronia West OPP.
Just after 11 p.m. Friday, police conducted a R.I.D.E. program on Mills Street East in Springwater. They looked over a vehicle and a driver that stopped for the spot check.
Officers were led to believe the driver, a 44-year-old from Oro-Medonte, was impaired by alcohol after speaking to her and she was arrested.
She was given a charge for impaired driving and is set to appear in court in Collingwood later this month.
